Leave existing socket in place.

Preassemble the mounting bracket which will support the new pendant light. 2 unscrew the recessed light bulb from the can light and then remove the trim kit typically this round trim piece just snaps in and out. The design is horrendous and dangerous. Unless the can for the recessed light is fixed to the framing of your house or at the very least to your ceiling the pendant light will pull the can out of the ceiling eventually.

Better safe than sorry. Install recessed fixture converter. It is basically a screw on light bulb without the bulb but with wires. Remove recessed fixture remove existing recessed fixture by twisting out light bulb turning and removing casing and releasing clips that hold recessed light shell to socket.

Screw that into the socket. Screw the prewired socket adapter into the recessed fixture. Disconnect and remove the trim from the recessed fixture. Step 1 gather all the supplies and remove the light bulb from the recessed light fixture.
